Dirty Dike - Sloshpot EP (2013)

Image
These days are to me the Golden Age of UK hip hop, especially everything coming out of High Focus Records . Dirty Dike was and is always my favorite. He doesn't give a shit about anything, he has this edgy, crude and dark humor, plus an awesome raw flow that would murder anyone on a freestyle. In his precedent records, he was playing with his two sides that can clearly be heard on his songs. The fun side, represented by hits like ''Hi! I'm James'' , ''Ten Dike Commandments' ', or ''Pork Pie'' (with its now famous punchline during a break ''YEAH YEAH SHUT IT SLAG'' ), talking about parties, raving, drugs, graffitis, mates, dissing people for free, bragging and showing off, fucking shit up, and the other one where he makes us dive into his more personal, dark aspect of his life. And I think on this EP, the second one is way more present. There is a gloomy atmosphere throughout the entire record (Mr Boss' pr...

Lil Ugly Mane - On doing an evil deed blues 7'' (2014)

Image
''Hip hop, the most progressive music in the bunch... So how's it been 40 years and all we fucking rap about is weapons?'' After a nearly perfect album, ''Mista Thug Isolation'', released in 2012, the production by Shawk Kemp (Lil Ugly Mane's alter ego. By the way, Seattle Supersonics' old school fans will appreciate the good taste of the nickname) in his last EP called ''Prelude To Panopticon'', the instrumentals evolve from a dark creepy sound close to these old 90's Memphis horrorshit, such as early Three Six Mafia, to a more eery sound, without totally leaving behind that southern touch that makes it instantly recognizable. The lyrics from the song of this seven inch, ''On Doing An Evil Deed Blues'' deal with his passion for hip hop, the recollection of working on his first beats and rhymes, putting out his tapes himself and going on stage without really making money. That's not the goal here ...

Dribble - Lover 7''

Image
Hailing from the mutant Aussie punk scene actually have, Dribble's line up has Nathan and Tom from Gutter Gods fame. This record is perfect from the start to the end. Drug fuelled punk influenced by The Stooges or Electrics Eels, the first song ''Girl of my dreams'' is the perfect example of the mix between these two bands. Snotty but recognizable vocals, loose guitar riffs and sound. But to me, the highlight is a the B Side, because ''High St Girl'' is definitely the hit of this 7'' for me, catchy chorus, still this Electic Eels vibe and a bit of Velvet Underground sounding. Great guitar arrangements and epic final solo that ends up in larsens and noise. Wow, another great band coming out from Melbourne. What's happening there?? Cool Death / Distort. 2014. Australia.

City Hunter - Demo Cs (2012)

Image
Three tracks in less than three minutes, that's what I like to call hardcore. Raw and harsch to the point. Aggressive cover, with a man smiling in the shadow, wearing leather mask and gloves, threatening a girl with a huge ass knife on her throat. I wish the second release will include a picture of the cut bitch. It reminded me of the good Giallo films era, and this comes in a case similar to old VHS ones, even the back have a storyline-like with the lyrics and a tagline''  ..'til the blade goes dull '' . Best packaging ever. There is this menacing sound that's mind blowing, I love it, violent and dark, I really can't wait to hear their EP that will be put out by Youth Attack records, I believe. This review is as short as this demo cassette, but what else could I say? Three top notch songs to listen to while you're prowling these filthy streets. A soundtrack for human hunt. Stab and repeat. Stab and repeat. Stab and repeat. Blackout rage...

Memoirs Of A Sword Swallower - Daniel P. Mannix (1964)

Image
I bought this book, Memoirs of a Sword Swallower, by chance on a depressing day. The author's name – Daniel P. Mannix – sounded very familiar, I was so sure I heard it before but I couldn't put my finger on it. Unfortunately, there was no list of his precedent works anywhere inside the book. Back home, I checked on the internet and, fuck yeah, of course I knew him! Dan Mannix is the author of many books I cherish, more particularly  ''The Hellfire Club''  (1959) and ''Freaks : We Who Are Not As Others''  (1990, Re/Search Publishing). Two jewels I strongly advise you to read. Memoirs Of a Sword Swallower gets close to the last one, since he tells his experience on the road across the USA with a traveling sideshow in the late 30s or early 40s. “ I probably never would have become America’s leading fire-eater if Flamo the Great hadn’t happened to explode that night in front of Krinko’s Great Combined Side Shows” After having witnessing t...

Combat Shock - Buddy Giovinazzo (1986)

Image
« We're all Frankies... We're all lying in hell... » Do you know this song,  'Frankie Teardrop'  by Suicide? Because Combat Shock's plot is based on this song. The movie follows one day in the miserable life of Frankie, a Vietnam veteran deeply and dangerously traumatized by his experience in the jungle. Every day. Every night. Every single minute he is haunting by his past and can't help it but trying to remember what happened back there. Flashbacks give us clues throughout the movie. He got lost in the jungle while on a mission, and can't recollect how he got there, stalked by a group of vietnamese. He finally ended prisonner, tortured and locked up in a cage for months and months, slowly falling into insanity. He woke up at the hospital, where he spent two years recovering. He is now living in a slum near the railroad in Staten Island, New York, with his wife and kid whose deformed due to agent orange effects. Sick and tired of hearing the cre...

Pimp - Iceberg Slim (1969)

Image
Pimp is a book you'd love to hate. It's hard, raw, cruel, but true (well, kind of, a bit fictionalized too). It tells the true life of Robert Beck aka Iceberg Slim, the number one pimp in Chicago from the fall 30s to the 60s. The book starts with the beginning, his childhood in Milwaukee and Rockford, Illinois, his violent stepfather, his tough mother and one incident that changed his life. When he was three, he was raped by his babysitter. A taste of injustice and disgust stuck in his mouth. He grew up wanting to be someone. But when you're black and poor in the 30s, what can you dream about? White people had the best jobs, best houses, best cars, best everything, and blacks could shine their shoes. But white people also loved one particular thing : screwing big fat black asses. So you have to make choices in life, as the first black man's hustle, he chose to be a pimp, the damn best pimp of the world. Remember the line from this Mobb Deep's song, « Shook One...

Last House On Dead End Street - Roger Watkins (1977)

Image
A lot of people talk about snuff movies, this urban legend running for years about amateur movies showing real murders on screen. But what is really a snuff? Because if it's only a murder caught on a tape, we can witness a lot on the magic box called TV. Is the  video  of the bullet passing through Kennedy's head a snuff? Is the exploded skull of  Budd Dwyer  in a live conference on TV a snuff? Or the videos of executions live from death rows, the defenestrations of a hundred of people from the 11/09 are snuff? Most people would say no. Maybe so it's a movie showing a chosen victim suffering, screaming to death under torture, showing visually shocking and repulsive details... Mondo films, like the most famous one «  MONDO CANE  » from 1962, are considered as the snuff pioneers I guess, as for many years people thought these fake documentaries about violent rites from old tribes were real. Such as all the trials and rumors about CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or j...

David Wojnarowicz - Close To The Knives (1991)

Image
Vintage Books (USA). 1991. Serpent à Plumes (France). 2004.   "A number of months ago I read in the newspaper that there was a supreme court ruling which states that homosexuals in america have no constitutional rights against the government's invasion of their privacy. The paper states that homosexuality is traditionally condemned in america & only people who are heterosexual or married or who have families can expect those constitutional rights. There were no editorials. Nothing. Just flat cold type in the morning paper informing people of this. In most areas of the u.s.a it is possible to murder a man & when one is brought to trial, one has only to say that the victim was a queer & that he tried to touch you & the courts will set you free. When I read the newspaper article I felt something stirring in my hands; I felt a sensation like seeing oneself from miles above the earth or looking at one's reflection in a mirror through the wrong end of a ...
